After graduating from the University of Victoria, Russ joined IBM where he worked in Canada and Australia in various sales and marketing positions. He left IBM in 1975 to become a self-employed business and marketing consultant in technology-related fields. He was a founder and director of Evergreen Technologies Corporation in 1983 (a software company with patented technology sold to such clients as Microsoft) and Genprobe Technologies Inc. in 1988, a biotech company.
